  • What Are the Benefits of a Doula?
Having a doula can significantly enhance your birthing experience. Research indicates that doula-assisted births have fewer medical interventions, shorter labor, reduced stress, and a 50% lower chance of a cesarean. Doulas also improve overall birth satisfaction, support effective breastfeeding, and foster better bonding with your newborn. They offer invaluable support not just to the mother but to partners and family members as well, enhancing the well-being of the entire family unit.
  • What is a Doula?
The term "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves." Today, a doula serves as a professional support person offering non-medical care and advocacy, ensuring the family experiences the most satisfying birth possible through emotional, physical, and informational support.
  • What Does a Birth Doula Do?
A birth doula provides continuous support starting from prenatal stages through to your transition into postpartum life. This support includes prenatal visits, on-call availability, and hands-on assistance during labor and birth to promote comfort and effective labor progression. Doulas also offer techniques like aromatherapy, massage, and help with breastfeeding post-birth, ensuring a comprehensive support system.
  • Are Doulas Just for Natural Births?
Doulas support all types of births! Whether you envision a natural, non-medicated birth or choose to have a fully medicated birth, a doula will be by your side. Doulas are trained to adapt their support techniques to suit your birth experience, providing unwavering support through natural or medically assisted births. Should your birth plan need to change due to unforeseen circumstances, your doula will continue to offer attentive and adaptive support.
  • Will You Be Able to Talk to My Doctors and Hospital Staff for Me, as My Doula?
While doulas do not speak directly for clients, they empower you to voice your preferences and ensure you understand all your options. They support you in advocating for yourself in discussions with medical staff.
  • How Are a Doula and a Midwife Different?
A doula offers emotional, physical, and informational support, focusing on your well-being and empowering you with evidence-based information throughout your birth journey. In contrast, a midwife provides medical care throughout your pregnancy, conducting health assessments like blood pressure and weight checks, and is medically qualified to deliver your baby. Both play distinct, crucial roles in supporting your health and ensuring a safe delivery.
  • Can I Have a Doula at a Hospital Birth or Just a Home Birth?
Doulas are versatile and can support births in both hospital and home settings. In hospitals, doulas help create a comfortable environment and work collaboratively with the medical staff to support your birth plan. At home, they assist in setting up the birth area and provide comprehensive support to the family throughout the labor process.
  • Can a Doula Attend a C-Section Birth?
While typically only one support person is allowed in the operating room during a C-section—usually the father or partner—doulas provide essential pre-operative and post-operative support. They offer information on what to expect and help with recovery and adjustment to motherhood, regardless of how the baby is delivered.
  • When Should I Hire a Doula?
You can choose to hire a doula at any point in your pregnancy. Early hiring allows for a deeper relationship and comprehensive support throughout your pregnancy. However, hiring a doula later is also beneficial, especially if new needs or preferences emerge as your pregnancy progresses.
  • Does a Doula Replace the Father or Birth Partner?
Absolutely not! Doulas enhance the support provided by fathers or birth partners by alleviating the pressure on them to navigate the technical aspects of labor support. Doulas enable partners to focus on providing love and emotional support, and they educate and encourage partners to be actively involved in the birthing process.
  • Giving Birth is Very Intimate; How Do You Make This Comfortable?
Your doula will establish a rapport with you through initial consultations and regular check-ins, ensuring a deep, trusting relationship is built before labor. This familiarity allows the doula to blend seamlessly into your birth environment, providing comfort and support as if from a lifelong friend.
  • Are doula services covered by insurance?
Most private insurance plans do not cover doula services. However, we are pleased to inform you that in our region, Oregon Health Plan (OHP) and Medicaid currently cover services for both birth doulas and postpartum doulas. At Reachable Wellness, we accept OHP, Medicaid, and private pay clients. If you have private insurance, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to inquire about any possible coverage or reimbursement options for doula services. We are also happy to provide documentation to assist you in this process.
